Born on 24th December 1950 in Chorzów.
Graduated from the Faculty of Geology and Surveying of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow in 1974. Received a PhD (1982) and the habilitated doctor degree of technical sciences in the field of mining and engineering geology (1990). Obtained the title of professor of technical sciences in 2004. The Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) awarded him a degree of doctor honoris causa.
Since 1975 – a member of academic staff at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice serving as: assistant, senior assistant, lecturer, associate professor and – since 2006 – full professor. Head of the Department of Geology of Coal Deposits and Mineral Research. 1990−1993 and 1996–2002 – a deputy dean for organisational issues at the Faculty of Mining of the Silesian University of Technology; 2002−2008 – the dean of the faculty. 2006−2013 – the head of the Applied Geology Institute of the Silesian University of Technology. 2009−2014 – a professor at the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal in Zabrze working on the EU project “Intelligent coking plant”. Lectured at universities in Bulgaria, Chile, Finland, Spain, Germany, Turkey and Vietnam.
Member of numerous scientific councils, including: Committee on Mining of the Polish Academy of Sciences; served as its chairman in 2007−2011. Member of the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of  Sciences since 2003 and of the Council for Safety at Work in Mining since 2007. Gives lectures for high school pupils and students of the Third Age University in Zabrze. Author of a number of publications as well as scientific and popularising books. Organises geological exhibitions as well as mineral and fossil fairs.
Member of the Association of Mining Engineers and Technicians and Alumni Association of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow.
Member of the Solidarity Trade Union since 1980.
Has no political party affiliation.
Married, has two children.
