Born on 18th February 1955 in Cracow.
Graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Electronics of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow in 1980. Received a PhD (1987), the habilitated doctor degree (1999) and obtained the title of professor (2002).
Since 1980 – employed at the AGH University of Science and Technology; currently works as a full professor in the area of computer sciences and electronics, and the head of Flexible Configuration Calculation Systems Team. Director of Cyfronet Academic Computer Centre since 2004. Head the PIONIER Consortium Council − Polski Internet Optyczny (since 2006), of the PL-Grid programme (Polish Infrastructure for Supporting Computational Science in the European Research Space) since 2008, under which the largest supercomputers in Poland were built, repeatedly placed among the 100 fastest computers in the world.
Related to Tarnów, where he conducted research and implementation works on computer control of lines and industrial robots at Fabryka Silników Elektrycznych TAMEL (Electric Motors Factory), since 1980. Thanks to his efforts, PIONIER – a high throughput academic Internet network − was installed in Tarnów. Its node is located in the State Higher Vocational School in Tarnów. Initiated the creation of Tarnów Scientific Society and the establishment of Perły Tarnowa awards. Organises “Tarnów i Nowoczesne Technologie” conferences.
Specialises in computer assisted processes, multi-processor systems, programmable devices and flexible configuration calculation systems. Manager of numerous research projects, including State Committee for Scientific Research, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, National Centre for Research and Development and National Centre of Science grants. Author of numerous scientific books, over 300 articles and papers and over 30 implementations. Reviewer in prestigious international journals.
Received numerous awards, including the award of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, for his work in the field of science and education.
Was associated with the democratic and independence opposition movements. Has conducted educational work among the youth for 30 years. One of the founders of the independent scouting movement, in particular of Andrzej Małkowski Scout Instructor Circles, in 1980. Worked in the leadership of the underground Scout Movement of the Republic during and after the martial law period. For this activity, he was repressed by the communist regime. Co-organiser of the Scouting Association of the Republic and its chairman in 2004−2006. Chancellor of the Cross of Honour Chapter of Scouting Association of the Republic.
Author of numerous articles and reports on upbringing and the situation of children and young people, co-author of the “Report on the situation of Polish families” and the “State Pro-Family Policy Program”.
Chairman of Tarnów Scientific Society, member of the Polish IT Society, EUROMICRO (The European Organisation for Information and Microelectronics), IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and IEEE – Computer Society.
Member of the Solidarity Trade Union.
Received the Cavaliers Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland, awarded by the President of Poland in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, for his activities in opposition movement in 1990.
Chairman of the Science, Education and Sports Committee in the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Term Senate. Member of the Emigration Affairs and Contacts with Poles Abroad Committee in the Sixth and Eighth Term Senate; member of the Culture and Media Committee in the Seventh Term Senate.
Has no political party affiliation.
Married, has three children and four grandchildren.
